![]() ![]() The performances are over exaggerated and ham fisted. The acting also is awful in this first episode, apart from John Hannah of course and some of the other more accomplished actors. It has the hallmarks of his style, the dark colour palette, slow motion and virulent red blood and gore. ![]() The first episode appears to ape the style of Zach Snyder's 300 movie. With that said, it's a show that I would recommend with the caveat that it takes until the fourth episode until it reaches its high quality (showing signs of promise in the couple episodes leading up to that). The series is so compelling, it's kept me up late at night on a binge even though I know I have to be up early for work in the morning. In addition there is a huge ensemble cast of talented British actors. It stars the late Andy Whitfield (who is later replaced by Liam McIntyre) as the titular gladiator, wbi gives a solid and emotive performance full of depth, and a powerhouse performance from acting veteran John Hannah as Spartacus' 'owner' who runs the gladiator ludus. The show tends to focus on the use of slaves for sex and sport. The show is set in Ancient Rome and is about how Spartacus, a Thracian man, becomes a Roman gladiator and rises through the ranks. Let me begin by quickly saying that Spartacus (Starz) has quickly become one of my favourite shows.
